The Dream Team's June Favourites
The 4-part documentary series is hosted by chef and food writer Samin Nosrat and inspired by her best-selling book of the same name: SALT FAT ACID HEAT. I’m OBSESSED with this show. I stumbled upon this series when I was on my own, the kids were down, and I was in need of some serious mental relief. Little did I realize that this was the perfect escape. From the stunning vistas in Northern Italy to the breathtaking scenery in rural Japan and vivacious culture in Mexico, Samin explores all four elements to the perfect dish while speaking with locals and learning their secrets to preparing various foods. This is a feast for the eyes and the heart. My only complaint is that it’s only four episodes. (Can you tell I take food very seriously yet?)
Okay, I know Cindy already talked about this sunscreen in her favourites a couple of months ago, but it deserves a standing ovation and second spotlight. I have major allergies to sunscreen, Photoallergic Contact Dermatitis, to be specific, if you are remotely interested (essentially, I get hives and a rash from certain ingredients in sunscreen when I come in contact with the sun, which kind of defeats the purpose of it all together!), so I have always been really hesitant to put sunscreen on my face because my reactions can last days! This sunscreen is clear. Yes, you read that right- CLEAR. It also goes on completely weightless and has virtually no smell. I can also vouch for its sun-screening abilities because I have been wearing it for a month now with no burns to date. I am so happy to have finally found a sunscreen that I will actually wear because, let’s be honest- face sunscreen is normally gross. I have never experienced anything like this product, and I urge you to give it a shot if you struggle to wear one on your face as well!
I picked this book up on a total whim as I was pursuing the books aisle of Costco (my favourite aisle, if I’m being honest), and I was drawn towards its gorgeous cover! Upon reading the back, I was totally intrigued and threw it into my cart (read: carefully placed in a dry spot so as not to hurt the beautiful cover). In only a few days, I tore through this book, totally riveted between the two storylines that Penner writes about. Nella, whose story takes place in 1791 London, is an apothecary specializing in poisons to aid desperate women who would, literally, kill to be rid of the men in their lives. Caroline’s story takes place in present-day London. Alone after discovering her husband’s traitorous infidelity, she walks the streets in hopes of working out the future of her marriage and her life. In a coincidence of events, Caroline and Nella’s stories become intertwined while they remain in their own time. A story of love, loss, death and friendship, Penner weaves the most intriguing tale that is the perfect Summer read!
I have always stayed away from any scent with the word “sweet” in the name or description in fear that somehow, Pink Vanilla Sugar would come back to haunt me. I now usually gravitate towards scents with notes of citrus, jasmine or gardenia, but this candle by Toast took me by surprise, and it is now one of, if not my favourite, candle.
This candle smells like luxury with notes of Cannabis, Cashmere, Musk, Vanilla Cream, and Tonka Bean. The musky smell of cannabis perfectly balances the sweetness of the vanilla and fills the space with the warmest, most delicious scent.
I am a skincare lover but cut out face and eye sheet masks sometime ago. Although I am happy with the decision to ditch the single-use pampering, my under eyes miss the extra moisture eye patches provide. To be honest, I can’t exactly remember how I came across these, but I am so happy I did! The Dieux Forever Eye Mask is a high-quality, medical-grade, silicone reusable eye mask that helps creams, gels, and serums better absorb into the skin. The eye patches are made of non-porous material and are packaged in a convenient tin for easy storing. I use them daily combined with my La Roche Posay Eye Cream. My under eyes are absolutely loving these.
Pro Tip | Pop your eye patches in the fridge or freezer for a little extra de-puffing!
If you haven’t heard, my boyfriend and I are adopting a puppy! I have been gushing for weeks, so I apologize, but we are super excited. Anyways, dogs are a part of the family, and this family loves art in every form. We decided to name our fur baby Neptune and ordered this beautiful, minimalistic print to hang above her bed. This Etsy seller has an incredible collection of prints, including Saturn, Tennis, and Chess.
Okay, I know what you’re thinking… ANOTHER drink? And another tea at that, lol. But honestly, when thinking of what I enjoy most once the weather starts to get warmer and we are spending more time outside, I truly gravitate towards something really refreshing. And as we know by now, I am a drink kinda gal! Now, if it wasn’t obvious, I primarily make my tea iced in the summertime because I can’t quite get behind the theory that drinking something hot when you are hot will cool you down (how does that work?). While I am a fan of many teas from David’s Tea, this one, in particular, is the perfect refreshing but not sweet tea. Simply put, it is a green tea scented with jasmine, and to me, the jasmine gives it just that little bit of added excitement. As for brewing, I just make it double the strength and then pour it over ice (all instructions for making tea iced can be found here). I definitely don’t love sweet drinks and so this is perfect! If you want to spice it up a bit, you can add it to lemonade or even try mixing it with another blend! Catch me with a cup of iced Silk Dragon Jasmine by the pool all summer long.
Rachel already mentioned this brand in the March Monthly Favs, and when she did, I was so glad! I only started purchasing Knix products in the fall but quickly fell in love with the material and the brand’s values and beliefs as a whole. Knix is a Canadian company that specializes in intimates, loungewear and now even swim! They are commonly known for their leakproof underwear, and this is a game-changer for those looking to move away from wasteful menstrual products (which can be a hard switch to make). I won’t go into too much detail, but I will say that I wholeheartedly recommend them! After placing the first order in the fall, I knew I had to snag some more product during their Spring Warehouse Sale. I just appreciate the value in making comfortable products. I definitely reach for Knix in my drawer over any other brand!
I often find that when the Monthly Favs season rolls around, I suddenly cannot remember what some of my favourite items are (does this happen to anyone else, like when someone asks you your favourite movie and suddenly you can’t remember any movies?). Anyways, a few weeks ago, while in the office, I remembered the straw I always kept in my purse but hadn’t ever used, just simply because I didn’t have a reason. I had just made an iced chai and, for some reason, wanted to use a straw to drink it and decided to break out the GoSip! Straw I had received for Christmas. Immediately the team commented on how cool it was because it’s made of glass and has the option of 3 different sizes, along with a silicone piece that allows for a softer drinking experience. At the time, we discussed what I would choose to write about for my monthly favs, and the timing was perfect! I figured this would be a great option to share with all of you because it goes that step above a typical travel/reusable straw for me. It has a convenient carrying case that fits both pieces, along with a straw cleaner! Plus, the case is vented, so you don’t have to worry about water build-up in your straw after washing it and putting it away. Amazing!
