Sustainable Pet Supplies | Part One

Hi Friends!

A few weeks ago, my family pup had ten beautiful and healthy puppies (five girls and five boys)! Andy (my boyfriend) and I thought it was time for a pet of our own, and although we have eight long weeks before picking up little baby Neptune, we have already started working our way through our puppy shopping list. If, like us, you are looking to make a few swaps in your puppy/dog's life, keep reading!

Collar and Leash

In the last five years, we have come so far in this department. There are several durable plastic alternatives now available such as hemp, cork and repurposed cotton rope.

Little Pine | These amazing leashes are handmade by repurposed rope.

Found My Animal | This collar is made from up-cycled blue jean rope and leather.

Wiggly Woos | The most sustainable option, these minimalistic collars are made from hemp webbing and nickel.

Pet Beds and Mats

I have found that all our family dogs have preferred a canvas bed to a fleece bed. It helps them stay cool and is much more durable. I have also found that dogs, especially larger breeds, prefer a flatter surface. You know your dog best so take these tips with a grain of salt.

Molly Mutt  | These beautiful bed covers are made of 100% cotton canvas and are made to be stuffed with your old duvet and blankets. They are breathable, durable, and intended to smell like you and your home. I absolutely love this concept because it helps keep your old fabric out of landfills while keeping your pup comforted.

Parachute | This gorgeous bed is made of 75% cotton canvas and will surely keep your dog cool.

Food and Water Bowls

When picking a food and water bowl, try to stick to stainless steel or ceramic materials. They are super easy to clean and usually dishwasher safe.

Brick Brick Ceramics | Handmade in Vancouver by Tara Dwelsdorf, these gorgeous bowls are not yet available, but I will be ordering two as soon as they are.

Waggo | A beautiful, dishwasher safe, ceramic bowl perfect for any space.

Wild One | Made of food-grade stainless steel, these beautiful bowls are a great upgrade from the standard stainless steel bowl.

Pro Tip | Place a Large or XL Sponge Cloth under your dog's food and water bowl for easy cleanup and maximum absorption!

Biodegradable Waste Bags

Earth Rated | These waste bags are BPI-Certified compostable and vegetable-based, meaning they can be composted in municipal compost.

Pooch Paper | Made of recycled, non-chlorine bleached paper, these sheets are 100% biodegradable and compostable.

Properly Disposing of Your Pets Waste

Please double check your cities guidelines before disposing of your pets' waste. The following are general suggestions but may not apply to your region.

Green Bin | If you receive our curbside green bin service, add pet waste to your green bin. Pet waste includes animal droppings, kitty litter, wood shavings and other natural bedding.
Pet waste must be properly wrapped in either certified compostable plastic bags or paper before placing it in your green bin to ensure the safety of the collection crew.

Flushing | Animal droppings can be scooped and flushed down the toilet. Most wastewater treatment systems are designed to treat this kind of waste.

Burying | Animal droppings can be buried in your backyard using a digester. Digesters are available at local stores and work similarly to composters. Please check with your municipality guidelines before doing this.

Eco-Friendly Toys

We have a selection of both natural rubber toys and antler chews. Again, this is a personal preference. I have found that the antlers can last years and becomes my pupps go-to toy. They are also great for their teeth and keeps them busy for hours at a time. Although natural rubbers are not my top choice since they still leave waste behind and must be disposed of once broken, they are a great alternative to plastic toys, which typically contain toxins.

Wild One | Made of 100% natural rubber, these toys are BPA and phthalate-free.

West Paw | These toys are made of recycled Zogoflex material and can be recycled through their Join The Loop recycling program.

Little Pine | Just like the Little Pine rope leash, these tug toys are made of up-cycled climbing rope.

Toxin-Free Grooming

Ethique | This shampoo bar is vegan, palm oil-free and packaged in compostable packaging. Bonus: With the purchase of a bar, a tree is planted.

Essential Dog | This shampoo bar is gentle on your pet and the planet. It contains no synthetic fragrances, sulphates, parabens, artificial colours or preservatives!

Attitude | The Attitude shampoo and condition is super gentle and made with natural ingredients.
