5 Simple Fridge and Freezer Swaps
Over the last few months, I've managed to make a ton of kitchen swaps, but I've recently realized that my fridge was still lacking and falling short of my sustainability standards. Below is a personal list of swaps I have recently made. I have tried my best to support my local businesses but have also linked options that are available worldwide.
LINE YOUR FRIDGE WITH BEESWAX WRAPS
Beeswax Wraps may the most versatile item on the list. Beeswax wraps can be used for almost anything (except meat and fish). Although I typically use my Geo Trio to wrap herbs, I have recently started lining a couple of my shelves with them as well! They are super easy to clean and are a great plastic alternative.
SWAP PLASTIC FOR GLASS WHEN POSSIBLE
Condiment bottles, leftover containers, butter, and so much more. The majority of my fridge was plastic. I hadn't realized just how much plastic until I conducted this Saturday morning audit. I don't have any little grabbing for snacks in my fridge, and I realize this makes a huge difference in what items you are stocking your fridge with, but if you are looking to make the swap, glass and bamboo containers are great for left overs while glass canning jars perfectly store everything from veggies to sauces.
SWAP PLASTIC BAGGIES FOR SILICON POUCHES
Whether you're packing snacks in your fridge or, like me freezing enough tiny meatballs for years worth of soup, these silicon pouches are incredible! These ZipTop pouches are made with 100% platinum silicone, they won't leach harmful chemicals like plastics can, and are completely free of BPA, lead, PVC, and phthalates. They are also food-grade, freezer, microwave and dishwasher safe.
ICE CUBES FOR EVERY OCCASION
The W&P ice cube trays are both beautiful and super practical. They offer standard cubes, (reusable) water bottle-friendly cylinders, chich spheres, and even crushed iced trays! Each tray comes with a protective lid for easy freezer stacking. These trays are BPA-free, freezer, dishwasher, microwave and oven safe (I'm assuming you can bake with them as well then)!
LET YOUR PRODUCE BREATHE
Besides reducing your plastic footprint, cotton produce bags allow your produce to breathe, keeping them fresher longer. They are also conveniently labeled with a tare weight for a fuss free checkout.
